Top 10 Ways to Move Past Being Stuck

If you like this article:

There comes a time in each of our lives where we are just stuck. We can’t see anything, we can’t think of anything – we are just stuck.

For the most part this is all in our heads. We have made up a fascinating reality and contrived absolute truths from our own fears and lack of knowing. At the time, it all looks so real and it all seems so overwhelming.

The longer we stay stuck the more dread we develop over the situation until the whole world looks like it is conspiring against us. We become convinced we are defeated (and we have not even done anything yet). The stakes are stacked against us and there is nowhere to turn. We are faced with giving up or struggling hopelessly against unbeatable odds.

The Top 10 Ways to Move Past Being Stuck

1. Seek out help.

Sharing the problem with someone may be enough to get a fresh perspective and start moving again. By working in partnership with someone you create some distance between your self and the problem.

2. Stay true to your values.

If you value fun don’t try and make yourself do things that are boring and dull. Find a creative way to honor your values. You will always sabotage things that are not consistent with your values. Until you are consistent with your values you will feel miserable, hesitant and uncomfortable.

3. Stay connected to personal and professional groups.

Surrounding yourself with a community of like minded people will energize you and will encourage you to keep your vision clearly in view and take the steps need to realize your vision. They will feed you new and exciting ideas and ways of looking at things and give you the ability to keep connected to the best of who you are.

4. Be on the lookout for parts of ideas that work for you.

If an idea does not seem to mesh with you, look further for the nugget that is there for you. Take that nugget and make it your own. Even if the idea is not exactly what will work for you there is almost always some part of the idea that can be a germ of a solution.

5. Be willing to stay in the game.

The man who started Kentucky Fried Chicken was rejected thousands times before he found a backer. He had to totally believe in his vision or build hope for success in some other way to keep going in the face of such massive rejection. Consistently playing the game is what brings home the dream.

6. Go for it even if you can not see all the steps.

Sometimes you will only see the first and last step and have no idea how to get from the beginning to the end. If it fits your dream, take the first step. This clears the way for you to see the next step. If you are not actively on the journey, you may never find the hidden passageways.

7. Keep moving.

Inertia breeds inertia and movement breeds movement. If you don’t know what to do, start any kind of movement.

8. Do the parts that you can do and don’t worry about the parts that you can't do.

By starting in the places where there is no or little resistance you build success and momentum. Sooner or later you’ll come up with a way to make the things that you can’t do happen.

9. Work in small chunks of time and effort.

Unless you can separate the whole into manageable pieces the task will always seem too daunting – more than you have the resources for. You could write a novel in 15-minute increments. It may take you longer but it is better than never having written one because you were waiting for more resources than you had.

10. Tell yourself the truth and then go with it.

You can only create in collaboration with what is. You can not try to manipulate things to be other than what they are. Love what is. Find a way to turn the truth into an adventure.

Remember that doing even one thing differently can set you free.

Please send me your stories of liberation from being stuck. Someone may be waiting to benefit from your wisdom.
