The Message from LuxannaLast October, one of our cats, Luxanna, was very sick. She had been sick for quite awhile and nothing we did seemed to make a difference. She just kept getting worse. We took her to the vet several times but he was unsure what the problem was. He suggested several things but none made a difference. She just kept getting weaker and weaker and thinner and thinner. She hung out in our hallway so that we would see her every time we went in and out of the house. I would pass by her in the hallway she would lift her head in her weakened condition and just look at me. I would meet her eyes and sometimes sit down with her to see if I could figure out what was happening and what to do for her. One of our other cats had died of cancer a few months before and it seemed like Luxanna was not going to get well either. One day I just said, "Look, I dont know what is happening. But I can see you want something from me. I have tried many things and they have not helped. Your eyes are telling me you are not ready to go yet, so here is what we are going to do. I am going to focus on giving you massive amounts of attention and resources aimed at clearing what I think the problem is and nourish you abundantly. I dont know how it is going to turn out. Ill do my part and youll have to do your part. We will give it our best and see what happens." Getting StartedI designed a program for her and gave her very high dosages of herbs and nutritional supplements (for a tiny little cat) frequently around the clock. I directed my staff to spend a good portion of their time taking care of her, fixing her food and giving her the herbs Day after day she did not die. She did not seem to be getting much better but she did not die. We kept this up for weeks and then we began to see a subtle, little something, that we interpreted as progress. This went on for about two months. Eventually, we could see that she really did look like she was starting to get better. But each time we stopped the program she would take a turn for the worse. We continued the program (slightly reduced in intensity) for another two months and we could definitely see that she was better. Luxanna in Full BloomLuxanna now has fat and muscle on her and is better than ever. We still have to pay special attention to her and make sure she is getting more care than the other cats or she will start showing little symptoms of not doing well. But her body is back with her spirit. The other day she was out climbing trees (something we have never seen her do before) with a kitten. She even ran across the yard and pounced on me while I was taking one of my walks. She still makes a special effort to meow at me when she sees me and still is most persistent in making eye contact with me. Luxannas MessageI once had a client who asked for my perspective on the following: She was trying to live by the Buddhist code "Happiness is wanting what you have, not having what you want." How could she reconcile this credo with the desire for success and happiness? I have thought a long time about this. What I have come to is that our dreams and desires are the essence of who we are. Our dreams and desires call to us to bring them forth into this reality. Our dreams and desires are like Luxanna calling to me with the spirit in her eyes for me to do my part and build the bridge for her to come back into this reality. I did not make her get well. I just noticed and recognized her call to me and agreed to do my part. I didn't know what steps to take. I didn't know if what I was doing was right or would make any difference. I didnt know if it would work. She was losing ground with just causal attention. Her call to me became more and more noticeable even as her physical presence was starting to disappear. I had to make a full commitment to do my part and take my resources away from other projects and turn them towards her, while not having any idea if what I was doing for her was making any difference. I had to be committed for a long time even when it seemed to not be working and then to stay committed when the progress seemed very slow. Our Dreams Calling To UsOur dreams are like that. They keep calling to us. They are our desires trying to make eye contact with us. We have these vague, annoying feelings that something wants our attention. Some call this awareness "divine discontent." We are not sure what it is. Even when we make eye contact, we still may have no idea if this is the right path. We only have a recognition that weve made contact with something that has stirred us. So many doubts and questions come up about our dreams.
Our Desires as Our DreamsOur desires are our dreams calling to us. They are our conscious claim on the recognition of the fullness of who we are. A dream cloaked in the form of our desire is more than just a picture of the future. It is the visceral recognition of our possibilities. The more deliberately we claim it, the more likely we are to approximate it. Envisioning our future is not about seeing clearly that which is predicted for us.
We invent it. We create it. Not in the sense of building a replicate of a preordained state, nor in the sense of finding the right path of getting to the hidden treasure, but in the sense of forming the unformed. We create it by taking time, resources and potential and forming them in the likeness of our dreams. We can do this consciously in the direction of our dreams or we can unconsciously recreate our past. Our yearnings and desires pull at us to the extent to which we are failing to make eye contact with them and listen to what they are asking of us. They nag at us to the extent to which we are out of synch with our visions, purpose, dreams and plans. When we are fully in alignment with our visions, purpose, dreams and plans we are in each moment complete and satisfied. We experience the "peace that passes understanding." Our Wholeness Calling to Us through Our Desires and DreamsVisions, purposes and dreams are not simply generated by an unfilled need. Our vision purpose, dreams and plans are our conscious recognition of our multidimensional wholeness in our past, present and future, It is the recognition of our expanded self. It is not something outside of ourselves that we must fight to obtain. It is ourselves as our fulfillment. It is our vital force that pushes and pulls us, shapes our perceptions, prioritizes our actions, releases our energy, and calls us to reconnect with ourselves as we create and invent the possibilities. What we can perceive to invent and create is never beyond us because it IS us. What we invent and create is recognition of the we with whom we are reconnecting. We invent and create and see our future through connecting with our desires as our dreams because we are not static beings and because we are ever evolving towards our greatest expansion. Our evolution and development calls us to reconnect with the fullness of the promise of ourselves as human beings. And because that fullness of ourselves is contained within ourselves in the moment but not yet fully delineated, we experience it as a vague image a possibility. We dream and desire to invent and create this possibility in our ever-expanding potential. Our capacity to imagine, envision and dream is how we continuously redefine our identity, renew ourselves and generate yet another aspect of ourselves that is now ready to solidify into reality. Our Dreams Are What We Want Most to Be AboutWhen dreams come true the purpose behind them gives meaning and satisfaction to life. When dreams come true it is a statement of truth that we are what we want most to be about. Implementing a plan that brings our dreams into reality infuses us with energy, passion, and inspiration because we are living proof that we are ourselves. Inventing a sustainable future demands that we are on-purpose - we are living our dreams. If we lack energy, drive, inspiration, motivation and hope, somewhere we have lost touch with our dreams, we have stifled our desires, and we have blocked our path to the best of who we are. Making our dreams come true is not something that might or might not happen. It is what we are all about in this life. Our dreams are not given to us or entrusted to us, rather, they ARE us us in the fullness of who we are. Our dreams are the best of who we are. Making them happen is coming home to ourselves. Shoving them in the closet or forgetting about them or pretending that we do not hear them is cutting off one part of ourselves from the fullness of our best self. What we can perceive is what we have invented and created on one level that is calling us to fully articulate and delineate on another level. Taking Your Desires and Dreams into RealityThe reason I became a coach is to help people get from wishes to dreams comes true. People recognize their dreams and desires. Often, however, they do not know how to take them from dreams and desires to reality. The end function that I serve as a coach is to help people and organizations claim their vision, align with their purpose and articulate their plans for getting where they want to go. This process generates energy and direction. It results in building a dynamic framework for living fully in the present and reconnecting with the future. As clients begin to make eye contact with their desires, they hear what is calling to them rather trying to divine what the future is destined to be. They follow a plan even without knowing that it is the right plan to the right place or if it will really work or not. Each day becomes a measuring stick for linking today with tomorrow. By asking provocative questions and inviting clients to dream into their own future, to listen to what stirs their soul, their desires become their reality. They connect with their vision and this reveals their purpose. Their purpose generates their dreams. Their dreams demand a plan. The plan becomes an inner force that drives their actions. The plan is an inner force that weaves the dream into the complexity of the world. The plan becomes the resource that brings their life framework into reality. As a coach, I help people reconnect with their best story and script. I help them conjure up their as yet to be heard from plots, characters, themes and adventures leading to their desired results and outcomes. Careful planning goes into the execution of their story along with contingencies, scenarios for change and the discovery of new opportunities and possibilities. Planing, goals, objectives, action steps and results are the components of brining a dream into reality. You follow the flow of events and resources that are congruent with your desired outcomes. Planning is the careful orchestration of the flow of events and resources and personal commitment to the likeness of the dream. Trust the Process Follow the DreamLife is a lot easier and more joyous if you go along with your dreams rather than moving away from them. They can get pretty persistent in trying to make eye contact with you. You may have no idea of the final outcome. You have to play your part out before you will know that. Who knows, some day you may see a Luxanna pouncing on you from across the yard as you take your walk through life. She may make eye contact with you to let you know that you have done your part in this world to give it back life, beauty and vitality. You may have heeded the call of your desires as they look you in your eyes to do your part so that the fullness of life gets it chance to make it to this reality. As long as you are living your dreams and desires you will always want what you have you will always be the best of who you are. And the world will thank you! |
