Brain Chemistry for a Peak Performance Life

Do you want to create in yourself the moods, energy, thoughts and behavior that you choose?

How many times have you attempted to do things differently, to change your behavior, to be the person you want to be and fallen short of your mark or just been overwhelmed by the impossibility of it all? You are in a job or environment that you do not like but can not find a way out of it.

Your life is OK, but you are stuck. You have reached a ceiling and can not get beyond it. You have a great opportunity ahead but you are not up to it, not prepared for it, are out of step with it. Your life is going pretty well but it is not everything you want it to be or that it could be. You have a wonderful life but your dreams have gotten lost along the way.

Peak Performance and Your Brain Chemistry

Peak performance starts with understanding your body’s physiology. Your physiology drives you – it drives your energy levels, your moods, your thoughts, actions, behaviors, your beliefs, your desires, dreams, and motivations. And in turn these all drive your physiology. Neurotransmitters – the powerful group of chemicals inside the brain - create and reflect our feelings moods, thoughts and behaviors.

Neurotransmitters are a group of chemicals in the brain that result in physiological and psychological changes in how we experience our lives. All behavior has a corresponding chemical pattern in the brain. Behaviors and our experience affect our biochemical profile and our biochemical profile affects our behaviors and our experience.

You alter your brain chemistry, manipulate your neurochemical profile and affect your body’s physiology every day by what you do and don’t eat, think, and how and where you spend your time. Through your daily behaviors and the environments in which you spend your time you create your biochemical profile and this is reflected in the emotions, energy, thoughts, actions, and psychological states that either bring you into peak performance or that block your best functioning.

Neurochemicals are not the essence of who we are but they are the physiological brakes or fuel for the fullest expression of the essence of who you are. A neurochemically imbalanced body is stressed. It is tired, it is listless, its mind is dull and foggy. It is weak, and it suffers needlessly more than it needs to. A neurochemically balanced body functions at its best.

Your Power To Shape Your World

You have an enormous power to shape your inner world – your experience of life. What you do every day, what you eat, when you eat it, what activities you engage in and when you engage in them, what kind of environment in which you live and work – everything you do and do not do – shapes how you feel, think, how you experience your life. You can create the range of emotions, energy levels and intellectual and creative functioning that you want. You can learn how to use what you do and do not do everyday and how you do it to create inner strength, hope, joy, mental alertness, and enthusiasm.

By designing a life that keeps your biochemistry in balance you can maintain a state of optimal wellness, vitality and performance. When you understand the optimal physiological requirements of the body operating at its best you can design your lifestyle to provide the diet, exercise, behaviors, thoughts, scheduling, and environment to support and nourish this optimal state of functioning in your body.

Most of us do not know what it takes to reach our Peak Performance. We assume Peak Performance is for elite people – not us. Because you do not know what your body’s optimal physiological environment is, most of the time you manipulate your body’s neurochemistry badly.

If you are not aware of your optimal physiological needs you can easily – and most often do- manipulate your brain chemistry and your inner conditions to your own detriment. Our society is not automatically in alignment with the body’s optimal physiological needs. You are often driven into unhealthy lifestyles and behaviors. You unwittingly begin to engage in activities, behaviors, and lifestyles that create neurochemical chaos in your body.

Today’s Hectic Pace

Because of the general structure of our hurried and busy lives we have set up habitual behaviors that actually stand in the way of our experiencing our optimal performance state. You get used to patterns, foods and self-defeating behaviors that hold in place your ineffective functioning. You are standing in the way of our own best expression of yourself. Through habit you get used to operating within a certain limited range of emotions, thoughts, ideas, behaviors – so that you are not anywhere near your own level of Peak Performance.

You may be fearful, lack motivation, be depressed, have a dull or sluggish mind, and have little energy or will power to make changes. You may be operating effectively in life but know that you are putting too much effort into it, stopped at a plateau, being less than you are. You know that you are just not living your life at your best but your habitual patterns, choices, behaviors keep holding you in place.

The pressures of our modern lifestyle; the need for convenience, speed and results; the lack of time to take care of ourselves and move our bodies in healthy ways; our lost opportunities to be outside in natural environments, and to get adequate rest and eat healthy whole foods create an internal biochemistry that distorts our own intuitive awareness of what is good for us and compatible with the biochemical needs of our bodies.

The Science and Art of Peak Performance Living

There is a science and an art to improving your life and living at your best. It is not all a matter of luck, circumstances, connections, genetics and what you know. It is a matter of understanding the needs of the body and making sure that your lifestyle and behaviors take exquisite care of those needs.

If you live in harmony with your body’s physiology, supplying it with all that it needs it will reward you with vast amounts of clean sources of energy – physical, mental, psychological, emotional. Because it will be operating with all of its needs being taken care of it will be operating without friction and resistance – it will go faster, longer. This will automatically open the way for you to experience your own definition of success because your ineffectiveness will disappear and your underlying talents, abilities, and resources will have the chance to emerge.

The trick with successful living is learning how to live a healthy life that does not interfere with the success you want for yourself. The healthier you are the more success you can gracefully handle - the more your body can give you in terms of energy, healthy mental attitude, enthusiasm, and high performance.

A body that is stressed, tired, in pain, foggy thinking, anxious, depressed, sad is not going to have the reserves to fuel your success. Your best self, your best abilities will not have a chance to emerge and grow to their fullest potential. Without feeling well and healthy your own "successful" life strains and drains you. You end up pushing yourself every step of the way rather than letting your body propel you forward and the dreams in your life pull you forward.

Peak Performance is for everyone – not just super athletes who want to get the most from their bodies or those in high-powered positions.

When you are living at your peak performance levels your body works at its own peak efficiency and is able to give you the most that it can without compromising itself mortgaging its future performance. At your peak performance levels you will enjoy more energy, greater physical reserves, improved mental focus, creativity, and productivity. When you are operating at your peak performance level things take less time, require less energy expenditure, and you experience more flow, synchronicity, and connections.

Your problems will not go away but they will seem to present more opportunities, be more readily solved, and will more easily become the gateway to evolution and development. You deserve to be functioning at Peak Performance. You are entitled to your best chance of being and feeling successful, fulfilling your dreams and having the experience of life that you want. The degree to which you have one or the other of these experiences is the degree to which you are in harmony with your body’s physiology or in conflict with it. How close are you to a balanced neurochemistry is the degree to which you will experience peak performance.
